The Artistry Behind the Coin
Obverse: The classic portrait of George Washington, originally designed by John Flanagan in 1932 and modified by William Cousins in 1999, graces the obverse. Washington's dignified profile faces left, with "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "QUARTER DOLLAR," "LIBERTY," and "IN GOD WE TRUST" encircling the first president. The "D" mint mark appears to the right of Washington's ponytail, signifying its Denver origin.
Reverse: The reverse presents a stunning tribute to Samoan culture and tradition. The design features an ava bowl with a fue (whisk) and to'oto'o (staff or orator's staff), traditional symbols of the Samoan islands. A coconut palm rises gracefully in the background, while the Pacific Ocean and coastline frame the scene, capturing the tropical beauty of this island territory. The inscriptions "AMERICAN SAMOA," "SAMOA MUAMUA LE ATUA" (Samoan for "Samoa, God is First"), "2009," and "E PLURIBUS UNUM" complete this celebration of Pacific heritage. The design was created by Charles Vickers based on concepts developed in collaboration with the American Samoa government.
