The Artistry Behind the Coin
Obverse: Features Laura Gardin Fraser's portrait of George Washington, originally composed and sculpted to mark Washington's 200th birthday. This design was recommended for the 1932 quarter but was ultimately passed over in favor of John Flanagan's familiar profile. Its selection for the American Women Quarters™ Program brings Fraser's artistic vision to life nearly a century later.
Reverse: Designed by Benjamin Sowards and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill, the reverse depicts Wilma Mankiller with a resolute gaze toward the future. The wind is at her back as she stands wrapped in a traditional shawl, embodying strength and determination. To her left shines the seven-pointed star of the Cherokee Nation, a powerful symbol of her heritage and leadership. The inscriptions include "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "E PLURIBUS UNUM," "QUARTER DOLLAR," "WILMA MANKILLER," "PRINCIPAL CHIEF," and the name of the Cherokee Nation written in the Cherokee syllabary, honoring both her position and her people's language.
Why Collectors Choose This Piece
Wilma Mankiller's groundbreaking tenure as Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation from 1985 to 1995 revitalized her community through extensive development in healthcare, education, and economic opportunity. Her visionary leadership transformed the Cherokee Nation into a model of tribal governance and self-determination. After leaving office, she remained a powerful advocate for social justice, indigenous rights, and women's empowerment worldwide. In her 1993 autobiography, she expressed her hope to be remembered for demonstrating how Cherokee values can address contemporary challenges. Her receipt of the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1998 recognized her extraordinary contributions to American society.
