The Artistry Behind the Coin

Obverse: The obverse features a stunning portrait of George Washington, originally composed and sculpted by Laura Gardin Fraser to mark George Washington's 200th birthday. This design, recommended for the 1932 quarter, brings fresh artistry to the familiar profile, honoring both Washington and Fraser's exceptional talent as one of America's premier sculptors.

Reverse: The reverse depicts Zitkala-Ša in traditional Yankton Sioux dress, holding a book that represents her powerful work as an author and her successful activism for Native American rights. Behind her, a stylized sun symbolizes her groundbreaking work on The Sun Dance Opera, while a cardinal honors her name, which translates to "Red Bird." A beautiful Yankton Sioux-inspired diamond pattern sits beneath the sun, connecting the design to her cultural heritage and celebrating the artistic traditions of her people.

Why Collectors Choose This Piece

Zitkala-Ša ("Red Bird") was born on South Dakota's Yankton Indian Reservation and overcame tremendous obstacles to become a gifted musician, violinist, and advocate. She studied at Earlham College, where she won awards for her oratory skills, and trained at the New England Conservatory of Music, performing at the White House for President William McKinley. She collaborated with William F. Hanson on what is considered the first known American Indian opera, The Sun Dance Opera, which premiered in Utah in 1913.

As a member of the Society of American Indians and later co-founder of the National Council of American Indians in 1926, Zitkala-Ša lectured across the country, promoting the preservation of Native American cultural and tribal identities. Her advocacy work with the General Federation of Women's Clubs, where she created the Indian Welfare Committee, helped pave the way for the Indian Citizenship Act of 1924, granting American Indians U.S. citizenship while maintaining their tribal standing.

This 2-coin set offers both numismatic value and historical significance, allowing you to own both major mint marks from this important release. Whether you're completing your American Women Quarters collection or honoring Zitkala-Ša's remarkable contributions to American history, these quarters represent a meaningful addition to any collection. Zitkala-Ša died on January 26, 1938, in Washington, DC, and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery with her husband, her legacy forever preserved in American history and now on this beautiful quarter.
